I tried to write about this experience as compassionately and accurately every bit I could, with every bit much complexity and nuance equally information technology deserves. I hope I succeeded.

Isabel is so relatable as a character that it hurts. She is the odd one out in her over accomplishing family, she has a controlling boyfriend, she always keeps her thoughts to herself. I love stand-up comedy. They make me laugh even when I don't want to. And so to find a book which has stand-up in information technology? A miracle.Isabel is so relatable as a graphic symbol that information technology hurts. She is the odd one out in her over accomplishing family unit, she has a controlling swain, she always keeps her thoughts to herself. Existence odd ane out and ever hiding thoughts are seriously two traits that I most relate to. You can fifty-fifty say that they made me like this book. The way she handled her decision-making young man in the terminate is iconic. She is a hero.
Mom sighs and slings her heavy bag over 1 shoulder. She throws me a grin and a conspiratorial look as she starts toward the entryway. "You're the calm in the storm."
Sometimes, I wish I were the storm instead.
I wish same sometimes. If I am quite that doesn't mean I am non struggling with myself
It is obvious all the same I will country that the volume was very funny. I have perfected my book face at this point but even that couldn't save me from smiling at my screen and people thinking I am a weirdo.
The book made me weep. Maybe I got overly emotional, but if a book makes me cry, I automatically think the volume has something.
Though something that striked me as abrupt was the way she inverse. Things had been in movement for a long time but the transformation instead of being seamless was similar flipping the switch.. One chapter she was all timid and cowering and hiding herself and the side by side she was a badass who spoke fluent sarcasm and was ready to face every single one of her fears.
So all in all a 4star

I actually had no idea what to wait from this book. But I enjoyed it a lot. Isabel was such an intriguing narrator.
The first thing that I institute very interesting was that Isabel has hearing bug. She can't hear what people are saying in loud settings. This was something that I have never seen earlier in a YA book. And I found it fascinating.
The main focus of the book has to practise with stand-upwardly comedy clubs. Isabel walks into a comedy prove at the outset of the book. And things take off from there. I adored this part of the story. And thought that it fabricated the book super original and I loved everything to do with one-act.
At that first evidence Isabel meets Mo and her friends (they are college students). I loved every part of the story that featured Mo and her friends.
The book also focuses on Isabel, her mom and her sis. And their relationships. This was a potent part of the book.
Overall, I loved everything to do with the comedy clubs. And with Mo and her friends. But I admittedly hated Isabel's boyfriend. I really liked how the author managed to put all of these things into one volume.
This was such an enjoyable read!
Thank you to edelweiss and Katherine Tegen Books for allowing me to read this book.

izzy goes through a lot in this book, specifically with an calumniating fellow and feelings of being unwanted. but she also is forced to acknowledge your privileges in the world exterior her private schoolhouse life. seeing her abound and realize both her strength and her hubris made me very invested in the story.
although this was probably my least favorite of henry's books then far I however keep to appreciate her skill as a writer.

This Will Be Funny Anytime is nigh a girl named Izzy who sneaks into a club to avert her overly controlling boyfriend one dark. Information technology turns out the gild is a comedy gild and Izzy accidentally ends up on stage at the mic. Izzy finds she loves the feel and at the club she meets a group of college students who mistake her as i of them and she just keeps up the ruse. Lying to her new friends doesn't sit right with her only she has never felt more herself than when she is practicing, writing jokes, and hanging out with them at various shows. Eventually it gets harder and harder to go along her ii lives apart- her old best friend knows there is something going on and her decision-making boyfriend is suspicious.
Bitch this fabricated me weep and for what!! I did non ask to feel?? This was supposed to be a hate read that I could brand fun of because I hate stand upward comedy. But this fucking book is so much more than that. This is a volume almost a girl finally learning to stand upwards for herself and I'g weak every bit HELL. I put this audiobook on last dark when I was dyeing my hair so I wasn't paying also much attention but so all of a sudden I was like oh no I hope I don't fall. The joke is on me!!!
Izzy is a character who I instantly felt for. She's felt ignored and basically unloved by her family unit, in the shadow of her siblings. She has a young man that she loves simply doesn't even realize that he is abusive. She doesn't know how to stand up for herself and through the course of the book, she learns to use her vox. To brand people express joy, to tell them off, to be an accented messy queen.
I still don't like stand upwardly one-act only honestly information technology wasn't that terrible, I just had second hand blench a few times and not the whole time. I call up because I had already read a book this year (that shall not exist named merely has "better" in the title and written by a booktuber) that had such an AWFUL stand "comedian", this was mostly fine.
Seeing Izzy and her young man honestly fucked me upwardly. We see him gaslight her, literally threaten her life "as a joke" and just be an all around decision-making piece of shit. The way she merely excused information technology considering she didn't meet what it really was broke my heart. It's so real and the fact that there are girls and boys and nonbinaries out there right at present in such shitty relationships suCKs. Not to mention the actual nasty ass dudes in this book existence gross because a daughter cartel vesture a dress. Yes I am going to go fight men with my bare easily cheers.
The friendships in this are what besides fabricated it for me. Izzy and Mo were simply And so proficient I'm cri. This is the kind of book where information technology could have been, oh she falls in love with a cute boy that fixes her life but no she falls in love with something else entirely and it was beautiful. I didn't wait this book to be so feminist either simply get off plsss. Almost verbal same energy as This Song Will Salve Your Life which was another book I enjoyed back in the solar day.
I still don't similar stand comedy and I would like to non read any more but this slapped in ways information technology shouldn't.

Information technology'due south no secret that I am particularly picky virtually which contemporaries I pick, but this is the writer'south third hit for me, so she's firmly cemented herself as one of the few contemporary authors on my auto-purchase listing. This book may accept actually been my favorite of hers, as I institute the characters really enjoyable and the story fun and inspiring.
Izzy is great. She'southward so wonderfully flawed as a person, but she is also really crawly. She's got a hearing issue too, which I have not read virtually before. And she has been in this pretty atrocious human relationship for far as well long. She feels like a 5th bike in her family, and she but seems then lost in general. She wanders (accidentally) into a comedy club where she finds herself taking the stage and really really enjoying information technology. While she's there, she meets some comedians who treat her kindly and want to show her the ropes. Of course, they are in college and Izzy lies and pretends she is too. (This is the i thing I don't honey near the book- these lies always come up back to bite people, why do they do information technology? Actually, my problem is likely less with the volume and more with humanity, but that is a post for another fourth dimension*.)
As the book evolves, Izzy begins to find her strength as she becomes braver behind the mic. One of my favorite aspects of the book was Izzy coming to terms with what a complete asshat her beau was. Like I want to push this guy in front of a motorbus. (It's fine because he'southward fictional; faux-murder is allowed.) She's finding her agency with her current relationships, including her family unit. Merely at the same time, she worries well-nigh her new friends finding her out, and balancing her real life with her "higher comedy" life.
Bottom Line: Ultimately it's a fun, sweetness story with a cracking character who learns quite a few life lessons along the way.

I am definitely not the demographic for this book just thoroughly enjoyed the mature and insightful perspective of 16-twelvemonth-old protagonist Izzy. An abusive relationship, significant insecurity, loneliness even among peers, self-worth and the broader development of relationships as a immature adult are some of the issues dealt with in this witty read.
Very happy to accept picked this one upwardly.
TW: toxic/calumniating human relationship, sexual harassment.
This was my get-go book of Katie Henry's and I'm certain it won't be my last. From the discussions of treatment of people of dissimilar genders, races and sexualities in comedy to toxic relationships to complicated family dynamics to sexual harassment, every topic was explored in a nuanced and engaging way. This was an unexpected delight and a read I'd 100% recommend. I loved every minute.TW: toxic/abusive relationship, sexual harassment.

Izzy has felt like a wallflower her entire life. At dwelling house, she's overshadowed by her siblings and high-powered parents while her boyfriend is eager to talk for her. So, i night when she accidentally walks into a stand-upwards comedy order and performs, she's shocked at how skilful it feels. Afterward, she meets Mo who introduces her to her friends and the world of stand-up comedy.
First off, I desire to notation that I did listen to this on audio and the narrator for that was excellent. She did such a skillful job with voices and showcasing the emotion that needed to be shown. It actually made it such a wonderful reading experience.
Correct off the bat, I knew I was in trouble and not just because of what my friends had said about it, but Izzy is a character y'all can instantly feel for. She's felt ignored and unloved by her family, always a shadow to something else that is going on between them. Her fellow is someone that she loves, but doesn't realize how abusive he is. She doesn't know how to apply her vocalism, so watching Izzy slowly learn that is magnificent. Seeing her grow, I was so proud of her honestly.
The abusive relationship hither was done so well. I was irritated, I was ready to impale him, simply I loved how Henry handled information technology and the advice that Izzy was given throughout the novel about how to deal with it. Knowing how many people are in calumniating relationships right now, I feel like this book could help. It'southward something that can not only assistance people in abusive relationships, but people who have loved ones in abusive relationships.
Friendship was another strong highlight. Izzy and Mo had a cute friendship. I loved what they had and seeing them together was truly spectacular. I just delight requite me all the relationships like this.
While this book touch on a heavy subject, it was done well and balanced out nicely with strong friendships and comedy.

This story is very well crafted in terms of the abusive nature a person show in this book as well as some victim blaming shown hither. Izzy was funny, engaging and very well crafted. You understood her perfectly well in her story and how this turned out the way it turned out.
The story features some heavy gaslighting and some dubiety which in itself can be a trigger and if you don't feel up for that, information technology's a skilful thought to skip information technology. Merely the story ends on a good annotation, and it shows the backbone you can notice with proficient friends and finding your own vox.

Content Alert: (view spoiler)[Sexual assault, predation, gaslighting, bullying (hibernate spoiler)]Officially my favorite of the books featuring standup. I liked how unexpected this book was in so many ways. It's prissy that the heroine is shy, placidity, and doesn't at all seem like the stereotype of a comic. I'thou non sure if she'll stick with it ultimately, only standup helps her find her phonation and conviction. Whether she loves it for life or only has it every bit a hobby for a while, the bear upon to her personal journey is massive and powerful. The novel also tackles problems with toxic relationships, both with her family and her boyfriend. It'due south all well washed, only I do warn that Izzy can be a frustrating heroine, because she lies a lot and she's also very naive and passively accepts abuse. Personally, I thought all of that felt believable for her character, except perhaps for her reaction to the comedy club homo. Henry's 3rd novel T
One of my neat literary pleasures of 2020 was discovering Katie Henry's works. Henry's young adult novels characteristic quirky teenage protagonists facing issues and dilemmas that nigh of us would struggle with as adults. The characters are all frustratingly relatable because, as readers, we can come across how they could and should alter themselves to make interacting with the world a bit smoother and easier. Merely, like all of united states, they can't or aren't ready to make that alter just yet.Henry's third novel This Will Be Funny Someday may exist her all-time offering so far, which is high praise given how much I enjoyed her first two novels.
Xvi-year-old Izzy has e'er felt a bit out of place. In her family, she sees herself equally the odd person out when it comes to the matched pairs -- her parents and her older twin siblings. At school, Izzy is protected by her relationship with her fellow, though fifty-fifty that has come up at the toll of alienating her all-time friend. Izzy has deep-rooted issues when it come up to assigning herself value -- whether it's the (misconception) that she ruined her mother'south career when her mom discovered she was pregnant with Izzy or the emotionally abusive nature of her human relationship with her fellow.
One twenty-four hour period while hiding from her boyfriend, Izzy stumbles into a bar and an open-mic night for aspiring comedians. Using the story of how a guy her in class didn't accept a Shakespeare scene seriously, Izzy stumbles into the world of one-act -- and meets some new friends forth the way. These older friends (who believe Izzy is college not high school and she isn't quick to disavow them of this), brainstorm to encourage her -- not only in the realms of comedy but too in accepting herself for who she is and speaking upward for herself.
And and then, Izzy begins to live a double-life of sorts as she hones her set up, borrowing heavily from her life for her one-act.
Filled with relatable, fully realized, and wonderfully flawed characters, This Will Be Funny Someday is chock full of the all-time kind of teen angst out there -- teen malaise that is built on characters and our relationships with them. In that location are multiple points in which y'all may desire to scream at Izzy to just tell her friends or family the truth or to get far, far away from her fellow (this becomes even more credible when Izzy finally comes clean with readers well-nigh how far over the line he'due south gone in his abuse), but Izzy (like us) frustratingly refuses to do so.
This was one of the best novels I read in 2020 and I'm grateful to the publisher and Ms. Henry for the digital ARC I received on NetGalley. The but drawback here is that while many anxious readers volition let to get to dive into a new Katie Henry novel next week, I will have to wait a scrap longer for the pleasure of reading a new-to-me Katie Henry story.
I received a digital ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
